Strutt EV1c vs WHILL Model F: Which Smart Power Chair Is Easier to Travel With?

A smart power chair can make daily mobility easier, but “easy to travel with” means two very different things.

The Strutt ev¹c is designed like a robotic mobility platform. It uses multiple sensors, four-wheel drive, active steering, obstacle detection, assisted navigation, and over-the-air software updates. The WHILL Model F takes the opposite approach: it is lighter, folds quickly, uses an airline-approved removable battery, and is easier to load into a vehicle.

Quick conclusion: Choose the WHILL Model F if folding, car transport, flights, and simple operation are your priorities. Consider the Strutt ev¹c if you need longer range, stronger terrain capability, a higher weight capacity, and advanced driving assistance.

Why the Strutt ev¹c Is More Than a Conventional Power Chair

The Strutt ev¹c uses the company’s evSense system, including LiDAR, time-of-flight sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and cameras. These sensors provide 360-degree environmental awareness for its assisted-driving functions.

Co-Pilot can detect obstacles and apply gentle braking. Co-Pilot+ adds steering correction for narrow corridors and elevators. Pathfinder lets the rider select a destination on the chair’s map, while Waypoints can store frequently visited indoor destinations.

The four-wheel Quad-Drive system independently controls torque and steering. Strutt says the chair can handle inclines of approximately 13 degrees, cross gaps up to 12 cm and clear obstacles up to 5 cm. Four-wheel independent suspension also targets greater stability on grass, gravel and uneven paths.

These capabilities make the ev¹c attractive to users who want help navigating complex indoor spaces or less predictable outdoor surfaces. However, its sensors are assistance systems, not a replacement for the rider’s attention. Reflective surfaces, weather and sensor blind spots can still affect obstacle detection.

Why the WHILL Model F Is Better Suited to Frequent Travel

The WHILL Model F focuses on a much simpler travel problem: folding the chair, putting it into a vehicle and storing it in a small space.

It folds in less than three seconds and measures approximately 465 mm in length when folded. The chair weighs 26.7 kg with the battery installed and about 24 kg after the 2.7 kg battery is removed.

That is still too heavy for some users or caregivers to lift safely, but it is substantially lighter than the complete Strutt ev¹c. Before buying, users should test whether the person who will load the chair can repeatedly lift and position it without injury.

The Model F battery provides a claimed range of up to 20 km and takes up to five hours to charge. WHILL lists the lithium-ion battery as approved for airline travel, although passengers must still contact their airline before departure and follow its battery-removal and terminal-protection rules.

Portability: Folding Is Not the Same as Modular Transport

The Model F folds in one motion and normally stays in one piece. This is convenient for taxis, rental cars, trains and household storage.

The Strutt ev¹c does not compete primarily as an ultralight folding chair. Instead, it can be separated into as many as five modules, including the battery. Its heaviest module weighs approximately 19.8 kg.

This modular structure may make individual sections manageable, but loading several components takes more time and requires enough cargo space. Reassembly also needs to be considered at the destination.

For a user who flies frequently or changes vehicles often, the Model F is the more practical choice. For someone who transports the chair less frequently and values advanced driving support, the ev¹c may justify its added complexity.

Range, Speed and Outdoor Performance

The Strutt ev¹c offers up to 32 km of claimed range when evSense is deactivated and approximately 26 km when it is active. Its maximum listed speed reaches 12.9 km/h, although the available speed may be restricted by local regulations.

The Model F is limited to 6 km/h with a claimed range of up to 20 km. Its 35 mm obstacle clearance and 10-degree incline rating are adequate for many paved routes, shopping centers, airports and everyday indoor environments.

Actual range for either chair will vary with rider weight, hills, temperature, tire condition, surface resistance, speed and battery age. Buyers should not treat the maximum advertised range as a guaranteed daily distance.

Turning in Elevators and Small Apartments

Both products list a 780 mm turning radius, so their numerical turning performance looks similar. Their physical behavior and total width, however, can feel different in a real apartment, bathroom or elevator.

Measure the narrowest doorway, elevator entrance, bedroom turning space and vehicle cargo opening before ordering. The chair’s listed width is only one part of the calculation because hands, armrests, bags and joystick position also require clearance.

Comfort and User Fit

The Strutt ev¹c supports up to 160 kg and provides multiple adjustments for seat height, seat width, armrest height and backrest angle. Its armrests and footrest fold upward to make transfers easier.

The Model F supports up to 115 kg and is built around a simpler folding frame. Its controller can be positioned on either side, and the armrest width has adjustable positions.

Neither specification sheet can determine whether a chair will provide adequate posture support. Users who need tilt, recline, pressure management, head support or customized seating should consult a qualified mobility professional before choosing either model.

App Control and Software Dependence

Both chairs provide smartphone functions, but the scope is different.

The WHILL app can display battery information, change drive settings, lock the chair and remotely reposition it through Bluetooth. These functions are useful when the chair is parked away from the user.

The Strutt app supports remote control and access to its intelligent features. The ev¹c also receives over-the-air software and feature updates. This can improve the product after purchase, but it also means buyers should examine software support, privacy controls, service availability and long-term update policies.

Which One Should You Buy?

Choose the Strutt ev¹c if:

  • You want collision avoidance and assisted steering.
  • You regularly travel over grass, gravel, slopes or uneven paths.
  • You need a weight capacity above 115 kg.
  • You value a longer claimed driving range.
  • You have sufficient vehicle space and help with modular transport.

Choose the WHILL Model F if:

  • You frequently use cars, taxis, trains or airplanes.
  • You want a chair that folds quickly without multiple heavy sections.
  • Your routes are mainly indoors or on maintained pavement.
  • You prefer simpler controls and an established travel-chair format.
  • The 115 kg capacity and seating dimensions fit the intended rider.

Final Verdict

The Strutt ev¹c is the more technologically ambitious product. Its sensors, four-wheel drive and navigation assistance may reduce the effort required in complex environments. It is also heavier, more complicated to transport and dependent on regional availability and support.

The WHILL Model F is the easier travel companion for most buyers. It gives up speed, terrain capability and advanced autonomy in exchange for fast folding, lower weight and a travel-ready removable battery.

The final decision should be made after a test drive. Check transfer access, seating comfort, braking response, joystick control, turning space, caregiver lifting ability and local repair support before purchase.
